The International Federation of Translators (FIT)
The International Federation of Translators is the voice of associations of translators, interpreters and terminologists around the world.
The primary goal of the Federation is to promote professionalism, to improve the status of the profession in all countries and to uphold translators’ rights and freedom of expression. Its members work across a wide range of fields, including literary, scientific, and technical sectors, public service, legal and court settings, conference interpreting, media, diplomacy, and academia.
FIT supports its members internationally, enhancing visibility, fostering community, and ensuring a sustainable future for the profession. Through collaboration, FIT also works to build a unified, recognized, and sustainable profession that can meet the growing global demand for translation and interpreting services. Member associations benefit from both local and international initiatives coordinated by a federation with a broad global presence and established connections.
Objectives of the Federation
As outlined in its constitution, FIT’s objectives are to:
- Bring together existing associations of translators, interpreters, and terminologists.
- Encourage and support the formation of such associations in countries where there is a need.
- Provide member associations with valuable information on working conditions, technological tools, training (both formative and continuing), and other key issues affecting the profession.
- Develop and maintain strong communication and good relations among member associations to further the interests of translators, interpreters and terminologists.
- Promote recognition of the profession and enhancing the status of translators, interpreters, and terminologists within society.
