Structure and Governing Bodies
Council and the Statutory Congress
The supreme governing body of FIT is its Statutory Congress, which convenes every three years. This congress brings together delegations from member associations and elects the FIT Council, to run the Federation between congresses. The Council, in turn, elects the executive positions and oversees FIT’s activities until the next world congress. The Council is supported by various committees, which report annually on their activities to both the Council and the congress. Following the statutory congress, FIT holds its Triennial World Congress, an excellent, global platform for professionals to engage in discussions and exchanges.
Committees and Task Forces
FIT addresses the diverse needs of its members through its committees and task forces, focusing on issues that matter to its members, prioritised by FIT Council. Committees are set up to deal with topics relevant to the profession, such as the literary translation and copyright, indigenous languages, education and professional development, human rights, technology, standards and research. By participating in these committees and task forces, individuals can make a valuable contribution to support the global profession.
Secretariat
FIT operates a part-time secretariat that serves as the central hub for membership administration and organizational activities. The secretariat works closely with FIT Council, and the relevant committees and task forces to support FIT’s operations.
Regional Centres
FIT has five active regional centres: FIT Europe, FIT Latin America, FIT North America, FIT Africa, and FIT Asia. FIT Regional centres promote FIT’s activities in their respective regions, organizing meetings to facilitate exchanges between member associations at a regional level, on profession-related matters, liaising with FIT Council.
FIT maintains active relationships with its external partners, via ongoing activities and Memoranda of Understanding.
